Cynthia Chin-Lee is a part of the cultural group being discussed in the story, so she writes from a position of knowledge and experience. The illustrator, Lea Lyon, used a wonderful brush-technique to present the characters in the proper settings, plot, and with the appropriate characters definition. This book shows its characters in a very positive light, and each is represented with ethnic and cultural diversities all their own. However, Operation Marriage is a beautiful tale of children struggling to grant their mothers equality and to gain the respect that comes from having married parents as opposed to having two parents that are not allowed to be married by law. This book is one of the first LGBTQQ stories to be translated to the big screen as a film. Operation Marriage, is about an 8-year-old girl and her little brother trying to get their lesbian mothers married before Proposition 8's passing in California.
